Sick Leave Entitlement

Q: I would like to advise on Sick Leave entitlement.

Employee will be entitled to 10 days of Sick leave after 6 months of service.

Next entitlement of 10 days Sick Leave from employees’ Anniversary date or Sick leave anniversary date?

A: 6 months then 12 months thereafter (18 Months).

Q: Can you please advise on the following example:

Someone started on 30.11.2022.

They will get 10 days of Sick leave entitlement on 30.4.2023 (i.e. after 6 months of service)

Another 10 days entitlement on 30.4.2024 (i.e. after 18 months of start date)

A: Yes, that’s correct. For 6 months, 10 days, and then every 12 months thereafter (18 months, 30 months, etc.), with a Maximum of 20 days.

Q: Do we need to show the Sick leave accrual balance on their Payslip?

We show only the entitled sick leave balance.

A: Although there is no requirement to provide a payslip in NZ, if the employee asks for their balance, you do have to tell them, and it is part of the Holidays and leave record.
