Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

As part of annual recertification all certified payroll practitioners will need to provide proof of their ongoing professional development for at least 10 hours in the previous 12 months.

What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

CPD is any form of learning or development that benefits you in your professional payroll environment. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Calls into the NZPPA PayTech AdviceLine
  • On the job learning
  • Reading any payroll-related publications
  • Attending any payroll briefings, updates or conferences
  • Any form of payroll networking where you may have learned something new.
  • Attending a payroll training course and/or undertaken a payroll qualification.

Why is CPD important to certified payroll practitioners?

Things are changing all of the time. By showing proof of CDP undertaken as part of recertification, you are demonstrating your commitment to keeping up to date and compliant with constantly changing legislation. You are also showing your employer, or future employers, that you are open to change and willing to learn new processes or ways of doing things which may improve operational efficiencies.

CPD Verification

Certified payroll practitioners will need to be able to show that they have participated in any CPD activity through an attendance record, certificate, receipt, letter, firm record or other means. Forms and receipts should be signed by the participant and counter-signed by the organiser or a named participant. Completion certificates, attendance records, letters from organisers and assessment results are also likely to be used for verification.

10 Hours of CPD activities are required annually

All certificated payroll professionals are required to complete at least 10 hours of CPD activities during each full CPD year.

How do I provide proof of CPD?

Each certified payroll practitioner as part of CPD is required to develop and maintain a written CPD plan and to record, document, reflect on and verify their CPD activities.

To assist in recording your CPD evidence we have created the NZPPA CPD Template available for download from the NZPPA Certification portal.

Timeframe to submit CPD evidence

CPD evidence would be provided at the same time as when recertification is undertaken as part of annual recertification that happens in the following year from becoming certified or recertification.

Recertification happens after the 1 April changes as the assessment is based on any legislative changes that impact on payroll.
