Averaging with OT and Leave

Q: We have employees on the following shift pattern
Midnight to 6am Monday-6 hours
Monday 6pm to 6am Tuesday- 12 hours
Tuesday 6pm to 6am Wednesday-12 hours
Wednesday- 6pm to 6am Thursday-12 hours
Total 42 hours

There is debate if they take the Midnight to 6am Monday-6 hours and the Monday 6pm to 6am Tuesday- 12 hours shifts has sick leave if they get docked 1 day or 2 days? our payroll works in Days.

What are NZPPA thoughts?

A: Are these days set so the employee does the same each week? If yes, then these are the days defined for the employee. So if they go sick for 6 hours, 1 day of SL entitlement is used, and if the employee goes sick for 12 hours, then a day of SL entitlement is used.

If a day is not defined in the employment agreement or roster, then it is set from midnight to midnight; in this situation, you have defined what a day is.
