NZPPA: Why Should a Payroll Practitioner in New Zealand Undertake Professional Certification?

Author: David Jenkins NZPPA CEO

I have never been particularly comfortable promoting NZPPA services within the articles I write. Sales pitches have never been my style. My focus has always been on education, sharing knowledge, and highlighting the issues, developments, and challenges that impact the payroll profession and the work we do every day.

However, when discussing payroll as a profession, it’s hard not to mention the importance of certification.

For more than 12 years, NZPPA has provided a certification framework designed to recognise the knowledge, skills, and competencies that payroll practitioners require. Today, this framework spans five levels, reflecting the breadth and depth of payroll expertise across New Zealand.

Importantly, certification is not a training course – it is an assessment of professional competence. It provides independent recognition that a practitioner possesses the knowledge and practical understanding expected at their level.

Certification is also not a one-off achievement. Certified members undertake annual reassessment, showing an ongoing commitment to maintaining their knowledge and staying current with legislative, regulatory, and industry changes.

NZPPA certification has never been about generating revenue for the association. Rather, it is a core part of our mission to support, develop, and recognise payroll professionals. In many respects, it reflects one of the fundamental reasons NZPPA was established in 2007 – to advance payroll as a profession and give practitioners the recognition they deserve.

Certification remains one of the strongest ways to demonstrate knowledge, commitment, and professionalism. As payroll continues to evolve as a recognised profession in New Zealand, it provides an objective measure of competency and helps raise standards across the industry.

Why a Payroll Practitioner Should Undertake Certification

From time to time, I encounter payroll practitioners who are unsure whether certification is worth pursuing. My view is that it should be considered an integral part of a payroll professional’s career journey and ongoing development.

As the profession evolves, certification offers a way to formally demonstrate your knowledge, competence, and commitment to high standards.

The reasons for pursuing it vary from person to person. Its value depends on your experience, career aspirations, current role, organisational environment, or desire for recognition. Wherever you are in your career, it offers benefits for both your own growth and the profession as a whole.

Here are some of the key reasons many choose to become certified:

  • Demonstrates a recognised level of payroll knowledge and competency.
  • Provides independent verification of expertise.
  • Enhances professional credibility with employers, colleagues, clients, and regulators.
  • Distinguishes you from those who simply perform payroll tasks.
  • Supports payroll’s continued development as a recognised profession in New Zealand.
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Provides confidence that legislative and compliance obligations are understood and applied correctly.
  • Enhances career progression and employment opportunities.
  • Recognises the specialised skills required in modern payroll practice.
  • Builds confidence when dealing with complex situations and compliance issues.
  • Reinforces professional standards, ethics, and accountability.
  • Supports succession planning and capability development within organisations.
  • Demonstrates pride in the payroll profession.

Benefits for Employers

Professional certification benefits not only individuals but also the organisations that employ them. Certified payroll professionals give employers greater confidence that payroll is being managed with recognised knowledge, competence, and commitment to standards.

They help strengthen compliance, improve accuracy, reduce risk, and support best-practice payroll management. As payroll grows in complexity, employing certified professionals is an investment in capability and organisational confidence.

Key benefits:

  • Reduces payroll compliance risks.
  • Improves payroll accuracy and governance.
  • Demonstrates investment in professional standards.
  • Helps ensure legislative requirements are correctly interpreted and applied.
  • Supports organisational confidence in payroll processes and controls.

A Mark of Professionalism

Just as accountants, lawyers, HR professionals, and other specialists gain recognition through certification, payroll practitioners should too. It is a public statement of commitment to the highest standards of knowledge, professionalism, and integrity.

  • Certification recognises what payroll practitioners already know: payroll is a profession, and professional standards matter.
