Theme Overview

The NZPPA 5th Annual Payroll Technology Showcase 2026 explores how technology can move payroll forward by improving accuracy, compliance, efficiency, security and the employee pay experience.

Technology continues to transform the way payroll information is collected, processed, checked, reported and protected. Automation, artificial intelligence, system integration, analytics and employee self-service offer significant opportunities, but technology must have a clear purpose.

Moving payroll forward is not about adopting the latest system or following every new technology trend. It is about selecting and using technology that:

  • supports the correct and timely payment of employees
  • reduces manual processing and unnecessary rekeying
  • improves payroll accuracy and legislative compliance
  • identifies errors, exceptions and risks earlier
  • strengthens payroll controls and audit trails
  • protects sensitive payroll and employee information
  • connects payroll effectively with other business systems
  • produces meaningful information for decision-making
  • improves business continuity and payroll resilience
  • enables payroll practitioners to work more strategically.

The Payroll Practitioner Remains Essential

Technology can automate calculations, workflows and reporting, but it cannot replace payroll knowledge, professional judgement or accountability.

Payroll practitioners must understand how technology works, how systems are configured and where errors or compliance risks may occur. They must be able to question system results, identify exceptions and ensure technology continues to meet the needs of employees, payroll and the organisation.

The future of payroll depends on the successful combination of:

  • capable payroll practitioners
  • well-designed payroll processes
  • correctly configured systems
  • reliable and secure data
  • strong controls and governance
  • technology that supports payroll’s purpose.

Purpose of the Showcase

The Showcase is not simply a software sales event or a presentation of the latest technology trends and gimmicks. Its purpose is to educate payroll practitioners and anyone involved in payroll so they can make informed technology decisions.

Attendees will gain practical insights into:

  • developments in payroll technology
  • artificial intelligence and responsible automation
  • payroll system selection and implementation
  • system configuration and compliance
  • integration with HR, time, finance and reporting systems
  • data security, privacy and fraud prevention
  • analytics, dashboards and exception reporting
  • employee and manager self-service
  • reducing manual work without weakening payroll controls
  • the changing skills required of payroll practitioners.

Key Event Message: Moving payroll forward means using technology with purpose—combining innovation with payroll expertise to deliver accurate, compliant, secure and reliable pay.
